By far my biggest most challenging cake/cupcake order yet! I received an email from a lady who saw my advertisement my brother had posted on the Sheriffs Office bulletin board. She inquired regarding a "pretty special" order. After many emails back and forth I was finally able to meet with her and her sister to do final preparations for their parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. On that day we discussed final Cupcake Flavors and quantities. She said they were expecting a LOT more people then they originally planned and would need to add more to the order. I really didn't know what I was in for until I started with this order....my oven was on for 6 hours straight (which I later found out added about $65 to my electric bill that month!!), I baked and baked and baked. I didn't want to make anything too early because I pride myself on making things absolutely as fresh as they can be. I had all the cupcakes baked and put away by Thursday morning...then came this cake....
The cake of all cakes....probably the biggest, most challenging cake I will ever make. I don't know what I was thinking by starting this cake on Thursday....I was up making this cake for 24 hours and all I had was the cake stacked with the frosting....no shape, no fondant, no decorations, no nothing on this cake yet. (Thankfully I had started most of the Fondant decorations Wednesday so once I was ready I could easily just add these on). When Friday afternoon hit I went into straight panic mode....I didn't think I was going to be able to get this cake completed in time for the 9am drop off on Saturday. My mom came over and stayed with me and talked me thru calming down. I think honestly if she hadn't come over and helped my physically and emotionally I would have had to call this customer and said I am so sorry I couldn't finish on time....my mom was an absolute savior...she dealt with the non sense I was making from the lack of sleep and the snippiness of panic mode!! She also helped me do whatever I needed done. After inhaling about 12 cans of gold dust edible spray paint (not to mention everything in a 10 foot radius was covered with a golden sheen) we were done!! We finished at about 5:30am on Saturday....my mom went home to sleep for 2 hours and I passed out on the couch for about an hour....at this point I had been up for almost 48 hours and I was a useless mess!! The biggest challenge was going to be the traveling out to Arcadia in the morning...........
I sat in the back of our SUV with rubber gloves on in a straight panic that every little dip or bump in the road mine and my moms hard work was going to be left in crumbles along with my tears....I apparently copied down the wrong address because after driving for almost 40 minutes it took us out on this dirt road that was filled with the biggest pot holes I have ever seen (probably not, but felt like it because I was extremely worried about the cake falling over!!)...once we arrived at the house I called to ask where my customer was and she said "oh no you are at my parents house!"....so.........we had to turn around and go down this what felt like endless dirt/bumpy road again and drive to the Church location. When we finally arrived at the location I was relieved that the cake was still in one piece! My mom and I walked the cake into the hall and placed it on the table and quickly set up the 8 dozen large cupcakes and the 75 mini cupcakes in the allotted areas the customer had set up. I can't tell you how relieved I was to walk out of that venue that the cake made it in one piece and I was finished!!
So what did you get from all this jibber jabber....I had the most amazing, most challenging cake order yet....had the best time with my mom and my husband and I didn't get a divorce after this week! lol!! I am so thankful she approached me and had the faith in me to complete this order for her parents very special day!!
